Sam Clucas reveals Gary Rowett’s long-term interest in him

New Stoke City signing Sam Clucas has revealed that Gary Rowett has held an interest in acquiring his signature since his managerial reign at Derby County. The 27-year-old joined the Staffordshire outfit on a permanent basis on transfer deadline day after spending just a single season with Swansea City.

At the Liberty Stadium, Clucas had a good debut campaign with six goals from 33 appearances but he was nevertheless allowed to leave the club after Stoke made an offer difficult to refuse. Speaking to the club’s official website, Clucas confirmed that Rowett had maintained an interest in signing him since he was at the helm at Pride Park.

He said: “The gaffer actually spoke to my agent when he was at Derby County, so it is nice that he has stayed interested. It was a really big pull for me knowing that the manager has belief in me and wanted to bring me to a club like this – I am flattered to be honest and just want to repay his and the club’s faith in me.”

With Clucas, Stoke ended their transfer business for the summer with seven separate signings and this includes the likes of Peter Etebo, Benik Afobe, Adam Federici, James McClean, Tom Ince, and Ashley Williams. The Potters have made a slow start on their Championship return with just one point from their opening two games and they may need to up the ante sooner rather than later to compete for a potential promotion spot.

As things stand, Middlesbrough are already holding a six-point lead at the top of the standings but they have played a game more than most of their rivals. Behind them are Leeds United, who have made a rather surprise start to the campaign with consecutive victories. Marcelo Bielsa’s side beat Stoke during the season opener last weekend.
