STOKE TO STEP UP STRIKER CHASE

Posted on August 20, 2021  in Stoke

Stoke City are expected to step up their search for a new striker in the coming days according to the report from Stoke Sentinel. The Potters had been in the market for a new striker since this summer’s transfer window started. The club has not been successful with its strikers over the past years since Ricardo Fuller scored 15 goals in the league over a decade.

The Potters have struggled to find a striker who finds the back of the net consistently over the past decade. Nick Powell was the highest goalscorer for Stoke City in the league last season with 12 goals and it was the best individual tally at the club since Fuller scored 15 league goals during the 2007/08 season. Fuller scored the same number of goals alongside Liam Lawrence.

Stoke City have failed with several big money striker signings in recent years. A lot of those signings have left the club to rebuild their careers elsewhere either on loan or permanently. Arsenal Academy graduate BenikAfobe is one of those big money signings and he has left the Potters to join Gary Rowett at fellow Championship team Milwall on loan. Welsh international SamVokes is another big money signing. Vokes has dropped into League One football with Wycombe Wanderers. SaidoBerahino joined Stoke City in a big transfer in 2017 but didn’t live up to expectations and has since left England for ZulteWaregem in Belgium. Berahino left for Belgium in 2019.

Lee Gregory is another striker expected to leave Stoke City this summer. He’s recovering from the hamstring injury that ended his season last term while on loan at Derby County. For now, Steven Fletcher and Jacob Brown are the only fit strikers in the Stoke City first team, while u-23 striker Will Godwin has featured prominently in preseason this summer. The Potters have one week to sign a new striker before the start of the 2021/22 English Championship season and around a month before the transfer window closes.

Stoke City have been linked with several strikers this summer from Nigerian player TaiwoAwoniyi who has joined German team Union Berlin from Liverpool to Josh Windass of Sheffield Wednesday who’s expected to be on the sidelines for some time due to injury. Another striker target in Stevie Humphrys has joined Wigan Athletic from Rochdale, while Austrian striker Andreas Weimann has signed a new contract at Bristol City. Lyle Herring of Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa player Keinan Davies are also striker targets for the Potters.
