Charlie Adam believes out-of-work duo would have suited Aston Villa better

Stoke City midfielder Charlie Austin has said that Aston Villa could have looked at the possibility of signing one of David Moyes or Sam Allardyce as their next head coach instead of turning their attention towards Dean Smith. Smith was recently appointed as the successor to Steve Bruce at the west Midlands outfit after guiding Brentford to three successive top 10 finishes.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Adam admitted that Smith is a good option for the Villains with his good track record in the Championship but believes the likes of Moyes and Allardyce may have been better choices to enhance their prospects of top-flight promotion, he spoke: “For me, if I’m on the outside, I’m going for the quick fix now.

“The quick fix is your usual suspects. Yes, Smith is going to have a chance because he gets his sides playing good football. But Sam [Allardyce], David Moyes; they’re going to get linked. They are probably Villa’s best options if they want that quick fix now and to get back into the Premier League next season.”

Villa came on the cusp of reaching the Premier League during the previous campaign after reaching the playoff final under Bruce. However, they could not cross the final hurdle after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Fulham and they have since been introduced to the reality of the stiff competition in the Championship.

At present, the Villains are on a run of just one win from 10 league games and this sees them already four-points off thepace for the playoff positions. On the contrary, Adam’s side are just ahead of the Villains by the solitary point but they have made some progress from the early stages of the campaign where they were lying close to the drop zone.
